Classical architecture stands as the backbone of architecture. Dating back to ancient civilisations, classical architecture leaves its mark on different aspects of modern architecture. Overall, it encapsulates the essence of timeless beauty in history and stable structures matched with symmetry. In this article, we explore the classical architecture revival kept within aspects of Singapore heritage design to create a landscape of contemporary design, and how these design principles are constructed and adjusted to the environmental climate.

The Hallmarks of Classical Architecture

Classical architecture dates back to the building principles of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. They were crafted with building materials such as marble and stone, and were characterised by symmetry, large rectangular windows, proportions, and tall columns, put together to create cohesive harmony.

While the times of Ancient Greece and Rome have long passed, remnants of classical architecture still exist in modern designs.

  • Durability and Strength: Buildings made with high-quality natural materials create sturdy foundations and provide structure
  • Symmetry and Cohesion: Calculated proportions and symmetry create a sense of aesthetic structure and order. Classical architecture is a pioneer of such design.
  • Traditional Features: Traditional designs and structures, such as columns, arches, and decorative motifs, have been reinterpreted in modern architecture to create a timeless feel.
  • Verandahs and Open Space: Open outdoor spaces encouraged outdoor activity and open-air spaces

Expert architects understand how structures are quintessential to the design and construction process, taking these design principles and interpreting them into new architectural forms are all hallmarks of innovation and creativity, and pay homage to the age of classical architecture.

The Classical Heritage Architecture in Singapore

Similarly, Singapore’s heritage architecture is embedded with structural classical elements. Classical motifs, the use of columns, and high verandahs are commonly found throughout heritage buildings, dating back to the British colonial era.

Black & White: Contemporary Heritage Design

David’s B & W – Maryland Drive takes on heritage design with a British colonial-style spin. Aspects of classical architecture link to this era-inspired bungalow house, with broad verandahs connecting indoor-outdoor activity, balconies, and over-sailing pitched roofs. High columns hold the structure of the house and provide dimension, with open walkways allowing increased ventilation and more natural light. Shaded walkways extending throughout the in-between areas of the house also add a nice touch, promoting outdoor living and a connection to the outside world.

Climate Suitability of Classical Architecture in the City

Architecture is designed and adapted based on the local climate and environmental challenges; classical architecture is no different. Historically, passive design principles were used to respond to relaxing heat and harsher colds. They made use of bright daylight to make precise shadows that increased visual intrigue and brightened the indoors.

Many Singaporean heritage buildings apply similar elements. When it comes to passive design principles, taking into account the tropical humid environment of Singapore is crucial. High ceilings and wide verandas help to ensure ample air circulation and improve cooling, providing shelter for comfortable indoor-outdoor living. Tall windows allow for ample daylight to brighten up the indoors, ensuring energy conservation and additional air circulation.

Aamer Architects are pioneers in utilising passive design in our architecture. Through embracing classic and heritage styles, we blend practicality and aesthetics to create comfortable, deluxe, and timeless houses for our clients.

Preserving Classical Heritage in Singapore

Conserving our tradition and heritage buildings has become crucial in this day and age. Despite classical heritage architecture establishing the foundation of buildings we know today, it is undeniable that new trends and the pressure of development cause people to lose sight of the true beauty and importance of heritage preservation. This is why we at Aamer Architects do our part to preserve the rich history and incorporate classical architecture into our designs.

From the avant-garde interpretation of a conservation shop house to a grand classical masterpiece, we take classical elements and aesthetics, giving them contemporary spins, restoring as well as preserving a part of history while carrying pieces of the present time into the future.
