In the face of climate change, architecture plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable living environments. We at Aamer Architects, one of the top architecture firms in Singapore, stand front and centre of this movement, integrating sustainable practices and innovative design into their projects, showing Aamer Architects commitment to sustainability of cultural heritage.
Let’s explore how we embrace nature’s gifts through three main key approaches: sustainable materials, reusing materials and conservation.
The Commitment to Sustainable Materials
Aamer Architects commitment to sustainability begins with the selection of materials. Two notable projects that exhibit this approach are the Cocoon House and the Branksome House. These homes showcase how natural materials can be utilised to create beautiful, functional, and environmentally-friendly living spaces.

Cocoon House
The Cocoon House is a testament to Aamer Architects dedication to using sustainable materials in the designs. The house features a unique combination of off-form concrete and tropical hardwood, providing a striking aesthetic while maintaining durability. The concrete provides structural integrity and thermal mass, helping to regulate indoor temperatures. Meanwhile, the use of tropical hardwood contributes to the home’s natural charm and reduces reliance on synthetic materials.
Aamer Architects design philosophy prioritises creating spaces that connect occupants to nature. By incorporating large windows and open spaces, the Cocoon house allows for abundant natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. This thoughtful design not only enhances the living experience but also significantly lowers energy consumption.
Branksome House
Similar to the Cocoon House, the Branksome House embraces sustainable materials to create an inviting atmosphere. The design incorporates off-form concrete, bamboo, and hardwood, which not only lend a raw organic feel to the space but also address environmental concerns. The raw concrete adds a sense of permanence and strength, while bamboo serves as a renewable resource that grows rapidly and can be harvested sustainably.
The Branksome House also includes features such as courtyard and skylights
That enhances natural ventilation and light, further minimising energy consumption. The thoughtful integration of natural elements ensures that the house is not just a shelter but a harmonious extension of the surrounding environment.

Reduced Waste Through Reusable Materials
We also emphasise the importance of reusable materials in Aamer Architects designs. Two projects that highlight this principle are the Raw n Refine House and the Railway House. By repurposing materials, we not only reduce waste but also add character and history to homes.
Raw n Refine House
The Raw n Refine house showcases Aamer Architects dedication to reusing materials in a modern, dynamic design. The house combines raw off-form concrete with repurposed teak screens from Bali, providing protection while allowing natural light and ventilation. Inside the house, the living space seamlessly blends with the outdoor areas, creating a serene environment despite its urban location.
Aamer Architects’ approach to Raw n Refine highlights his commitment to sustainability by integrating reclaimed materials as key design elements. The teak screens not only enhance aesthetics but also serve practical purposes, demonstrating the ability to create eco-friendly homes that prioritise both functionality and beauty.

Kite Roof House
In the Kite Roof House, we transformed a triangular site into a sustainable and innovative space. The L-shaped house features a striking mono-pitch roof resembling a kite, while salvaged timber from the original structure is reused as exterior cladding. This thoughtful reuse reduces waste and enhances the house’s natural charm.
Aamer Architects philosophy in the Kite Roof House emphasises sustainability through material reuse and efficient design. By incorporating salvaged materials and maximising natural light and ventilation, we create homes that seamlessly connect with its surroundings while minimising its environmental impact.
Tan's Garden Villa
Nature and sustainability are weaved into the project Tan’s Garden Villa – Merryn. As a chosen featured project, it was created with the use of natural materials like timber, marble, and granites, blending together with the lush vertically stacked gardens that were implemented following the homeowner’s love for greenery. Creepers twirl up the sides of the building reaching to the rooftop swimming pool adding an overall cohesive touch. There are also large windows to allow for natural light and air ventilation to fill the living space.

Conservation of Old Buildings and Spaces
Aamer Architects’ approach to sustainability extends to the conservation of historical buildings and the reuse of space. Two exemplary projects in this regard are the Emerald Hill project and Alias Villas. These designs not only honour the past but also create vibrant living spaces that reflect the contemporary lifestyle.

Emerald Hill
The Emerald Hill project is a conservation terrace house that was transformed into a luxurious weekend home for an affluent family. The design emphasises the importance of preserving historical architecture while adapting it for modern use. The house features a theatrical play of rooms that connect to a central atrium, creating a vibrant space for entertaining guests and hosting gatherings.
We carefully restored the existing structure, incorporating modern amenities while preserving the original charm of the building. By reusing materials and maintaining the historical significance of the site, the Emerald Hill project exemplifies a sustainable approach to conservation. This blend of old and new not only enhances the building’s aesthetic but also creates a unique living environment that celebrates the rich history of the area.
Alias Villas
Similar to Emerald Hill, Alias Villas showcases the firm’s dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of Singapore. Located on Holland Road, this cluster housing project draws inspiration from traditional Malay houses while integrating contemporary design elements. The architecture pays homage to the nostalgic charm of the area, reflecting the historical context of Kampung Tempeh.
By thoughtfully reinterpreting traditional architectural styles, we created a sense of place that resonates with the community. The use of sustainable materials and energy-efficient design ensures that the Alias Villas are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. This project exemplifies the balance between preserving history and embracing modernity, highlighting the commitment to sustainable design.
